Honoring the Past, Powering the Future: Celebrating National Maritime Day in Mobile

Every year on May 22nd, we pause to observe National Maritime Day—a day dedicated to recognizing the hardworking men and women of the U.S. Merchant Marine and the entire maritime industry that serves as the lifeblood of our global economy.

Here in Mobile, this day holds a special significance. Our city was born from the water, and our identity remains inextricably linked to the Port of Mobile. From the skilled pilots navigating the bay to the longshoremen on the docks and the engineers in our shipyards, the maritime industry supports thousands of local families and connects Alabama to the rest of the world.

Why May 22nd?

National Maritime Day commemorates the 1819 voyage of the SS Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, which departed from Savannah, Georgia. Since 1933, our nation has used this anniversary to honor the courage and sacrifice of merchant mariners, especially those who served during times of war, ensuring our troops were supplied and our commerce remained free.

The Propeller Club’s Mission

As members of the Propeller Club of Mobile, we are proud to be the advocates for this vital sector. Our mission is to promote the maritime industry, support maritime education, and foster the professional relationships that keep our port thriving.

Today, we salute the mariners, the port authority, the shipbuilders, and every professional who plays a role in our maritime community. You are the engine of our economy and the guardians of our heritage.
